Power-to-liquids technologies enable liquid fuels meeting specifications for road, aviation and/or shipping to be produced from electricity, via the electrolytic production of hydrogen. Variously referred to as powerfuels, electrofuels, e-fuels and ‘renewable fuels of non-biological origin, power-to liquids technologies have been identified as a scalable way to provide low carbon alternative fuels for applications that cannot readily be directly electrified.
Across three sessions, this online course will introduce participants to the technologies that make powerfuel production possible, review the policy framework that could support powerfuel investments in the EU and UK (including the Renewable Energy Directive, the Development Fuel mandate of the RTFO and the Innovation Fund), and introduce important regulatory challenges for powerfuels that still need to be resolved. The course will review estimates of the costs of powerfuel production and introduce two competing models for the future of powerfuels – more distributed production in Europe versus production at dedicated largescale facilities in regions with high renewable power potential.
Participants will leave the course with an understanding of both the enormous potential for the powerfuel market and of the very significant challenges that remain in the way of scaling up production in the near-term.

Meet the Trainer
Dr Chris Malins is an independent consultant on alternative fuels and climate change mitigation and the founder of Cerulogy. He works for clients in government, industry and the NGO sector on issues including renewable fuel policy, lifecycle analysis, and land use change, in both the EU and U.S. markets. He is internationally recognised as an expert in alternative fuel policy and sustainability and is an adviser to the European Commission on the innovation Fund and a member of the Fuels Task Group of the International Civil Aviation Organisation and of Sector Team 6 of the EU Sustainable Finance Platform.
Prior to forming Cerulogy Dr Malins spent six years as the fuels lead of the International Council on Clean Transportation. He has a doctorate in Applied Mathematics from Sheffield University.
